What is GATE? - The full form of GATE is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. IIT Kanpur is the conducting body for GATE 2023 exam. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) jointly conduct GATE for PG course admission in engineering/science. The authorities have released the GATE 2023 official brochure on the official website. IIT Kanpur will begin the GATE registration 2023 from August 30.

The GATE exam is conducted on behalf of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE. Not only this, some colleges and institutions, which offer admission without MHRD scholarship/assistantship, for them also the GATE exam qualification is mandatory. Further, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) use GATE exam score in their recruitment process. GATE 2023 will be conducted by IIT Kanpur for 29 subjects. GATE exam is conducted in online mode (Computer Based Test (CBT)) at various centres spread in different cities across India, as well as, in multiple cities outside India. The GATE exam centres comprises eight zonal centres under which various cities are listed where national level engineering postgraduate entrance exam is conducted. Moreover, candidates should be aware that GATE exam scores are valid for three years only from the date of announcement of the results.

In order to appear for GATE exam, candidates must meet the prescribed eligibility criteria by the authorities. The GATE eligibility criteria will consist of parameters like nationality, age limit, academic qualification, marks required and more. However, candidates must also check the list of eligible qualifying examinations, before proceeding to fill the application form. Candidates can check the general eligibility criteria of GATE 2023 below:

  • Age Limit - No age limit.

  • Nationality - Candidates must be citizens of India. However, candidates from other countries can apply for GATE if they meet the given eligibility criteria.

  • Pass Percentage - No minimum pass percentage in the qualifying degree.

  • Academic Qualification -

    • The candidates should have passed or been in their final year or pre-final of Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology (B.E./B.Tech) or Postgraduate (M.Sc) degree in any relevant science subject.

    • Candidates who have secured/are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries other than India: Should be in the 3rd year or higher years or finished their Bachelor’s degree (at least 3 years) in Engineering / Technology / Science / Arts / Commerce.

How to Apply for GATE Exam? Go Through Application Process

GATE application form will be released by the IIT conducting the examination. IT Kanpur will release the GATE 2023 application form in online mode. All the eligible candidates will be able to fill the application form of GATE 2023, by following given below steps:

Steps to Fill GATE Application Form

  • Register: Candidates have to register through GOAPS portal by entering their name, email ID and mobile number. On successful registration, an enrolment number will be generated. Create a password for login purposes for further process of GATE exam.

  • Fill Application Form: Login and enter all the requisite details like personal, educational and contact information. Along with this, details related to college and valid photo ID also has to be filled in the application form. Further, selection of GATE paper and exam centres as per the preference had to be done.

  • Upload Scanned Images: The photograph, signature and category certificate (if applicable) has to be scanned and uploaded as per the specifications mentioned by the authorities.

  • Payment of Application Fees: To complete the application process of GATE exam, payment of the application fee as per the category one belongs to in online mode i.e., net banking/debit card/credit card has to be made.

GATE 2023 registration fee

  • Male (General, OBC and Others) - Rs. 1,500

  • SC/ ST/ PwD - Rs. 750

  • Women (All Category) - Rs. 750

  • Submit Application Form: After completing the above given steps, review and submit the GATE 2023 application form.

Know About GATE Exam Pattern

Candidates must thoroughly go through the GATE exam pattern before starting the preparation.

General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics (for XL papers it is Chemistry) and Subject – Specific section

General Aptitude Section

Will consist of a compulsory General Aptitude (GA) section constituting of 10 questions. 5 of the questions among 10 will carry 1 mark and the rest 5 will carry 2 marks each. Total marks - 15.

Marking Scheme

  • MCQs - 1 mark for each correct answer; 1/3 mark will be deducted every wrong answer.

  • MCQs - 2 marks for each correct answer; 2/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect response.

  • MSQs - One or two marks for each correct answer.

  • There is no negative marking for Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

GATE Score

The result of GATE 2023 will be announced by IIT Kanpur on the official website. Candidates will be able to access the GATE result by login into their account. The result will carry GATE scores which will be used for further admission process. The result will carry GATE scores out of 100, qualifying marks for GATE paper, All India Rank and more.

Authorities will calculate scores by using the raw scores secured by the candidates in their respective GATE exam paper. For those GATE papers which have multiple sessions, a normalization process will be adopted by the authorities. Candidates will be able to download their GATE scorecard from the official website.

However, only those candidates who will meet the qualifying cutoff will be allotted rank and allowed to download the GATE score card. Information such as score out of 1000, raw score, category wise qualifying marks, rank and more will be present in the GATE 2023 score card.

Go for Higher Studies (Masters and PhD Programme Admissions)

GATE qualified can apply for admission into IITs, NITs, GFTIs, IISc and many other institutes for higher studies. Also, they can avail some reserved seats at IIMs for doctoral programme. Based on the GATE score, Institutes like IIT Bombay offers admissions to PhD., PGDM and PGDIE programmes.
