What is All India Bar Examination (AIBE)

Bar Council of India (BCI) conducts All India Bar Examination (AIBE), a post-qualification test or a certification test. To pursue a career as a lawyer or advocate, clearing AIBE is a prerequisite.

BCI has conducted AIBE every year since 2011 and all students graduating from 2009 onwards are mandatorily required to clear AIBE. AIBE faqs 2021 - The general questions

Question - I appeared in AIBE XV (15) 2020, can I also appear in AIBE XVI (16)?

Ans - Yes, you can AIBE XVI. If you haven't clear AIBE XV, then it will have to clear AIBE XVI. In case you have passed the AIBE XV (15) 2020, there is no need to appear in the AIBE XVI (16).

Question - I had applied for AIBE XV (15), but could not appear in the exam due to COVID-19. Do I need to apply separately for AIBE XVI (16) 2021?

Ans - Yes, if you want to appear in AIBE XVI (16) you will need to apply separately even if you have already applied for AIBE XV(15).

Question - Is it mandatory to clear AIBE in order to practice law in any court of India?

Ans - Yes, to practice law in any court of India, it is absolutely mandatory to clear AIBE. However, if the candidate has completed the graduation in law prior to the academic year 2009-10, he/she need not appear in AIBE.

Question - I know that those who have completed law graduation prior to 2009 need not to appear in AIBE, but can I still appear in the exam?

Ans - No, you cannot apply for AIBE if you have completed graduation in law prior to 2009-2010.

Question - How many times in a year, BCI conducts AIBE?

Ans - Generally, in a year, the BCI conducts AIBE more than once, however, due to spoke disruption in schedule, in 2019, the AIBE was conducted only once.

Question - I couldn’t clear AIBE in my first attempt, can I appear again in the examination for another attempt?

Ans - Yes, you can appear again in the next attempt. In fact, there is no limit on the number of attempts in AIBE.

Question - I have completed my LLB graduation in 2005, but still not registered with a state bar council. Will I need to clear AIBE now?

Question - Can I practise law without clearing AIBE?

Ans - Yes, if you are registered with the state bar council, you can practice law before clearing AIBE. However, in such a case, you will have to clear AIBE within two years from the date of registration at the state bar council.

Question - When can I apply for AIBE 16(XVI) 2021?

Ans - You can apply for AIBE XVI 2021 from December 26 to June 15, 2021.

AIBE 2021 Frequently Asked Questions - On exam pattern

Question - What is the basic exam pattern of AIBE?

Ans - As per the AIBE exam pattern, the test will be conducted in offline mode, with 100 multiple-choice questions. Candidates will be given time duration of 3-hours 30mins to attempt the test paper. To check the complete details on exam patterns, visit AIBE exam pattern.

Question - Can I carry my study material to the exam centre of AIBE?

Ans - No, AIBE is a closed book exam, and candidates are not allowed to carry the study material inside the exam hall. Only Bare Acts are permitted to be carried to the exam hall. Till AIBE XV (15), it was an open book test and candidates could carry the study material inside the exam hall.

Question - What is the minimum percentage of marks required to clear AIBE?

Ans - The candidates who score more than 40% will be declared qualified in AIBE. For SC and ST category candidates, the qualifying percentage is 35%. Candidates may check the details of AIBE cut off for more details.

Question - Will there be any negative marking in AIBE?

Ans - No, there is no negative marking in AIBE.

Question - Will I get study material from AIBE?

Ans - Yes, BCI provides the study material to all the registered candidates. Most likely, the candidates can receive the preparatory material two weeks after completing the registration.

AIBE Faqs - On Result and Certification of Practice

Question - Where can I check my AIBE result 2021?

Ans - The result will be available on the official website of AIBE. you can check your AIBE result by logging into the candidate portal. More details on the result can be accessed from AIBE result.

Question - Will I get the result in the form of a scorecard or a percentile form?

Ans - None of these. The AIBE result is released in terms of “Pass” or “Fail” status. Scorecards are not displayed.

Question - When will I get the Certificate of Practice after clearing AIBE?

Ans - The COP is given soon after the declaration of the result. You will receive the COP at your communication address through postal service, within a few weeks.

Question - What should I do, if I am not getting the COP even after clearing the AIBE?

Ans - You can contact the Bar Council of India through the helpdesk provided on their official website. Till then, you can use the result as a provisional certificate.

Question - For Judicial services, is it mandatory to clear AIBE?

Ans - Judicial services are altogether different exams. It is not mandatory to clear AIBE for appearing in Judicial services. However, if the eligibility of Judicial services mandates that the candidate should be eligible for practising law in India, then the candidate may have to clear AIBE.
