How many Candidates are invited for CLAT counselling?

Generally, the consortium invites three times more candidates than the number of seats offered by all NLUs through CLAT. However, last year, the consortium had invited candidates equal to five times the number of available seats. So, if the NLUs are offering 2622 seats at present, the consortium will invite around 13110 candidates for counselling.

The candidates will be invited based on merit cum preference criteria. Which means, the invite list will include the names of candidates in the order of their rank. Candidates should also note that the counselling invitation also depends on the category of the candidate.

CLAT 2021 Counselling Process

The consortium will start the counselling with online registrations. The process involves the following steps.

  • CLAT counselling registration (Only invited candidates can register for counselling)

  • Document submission

  • Confirming NLU preference

  • Seat allotment

  • Post-allotment options before the candidate

How to Register for CLAT Counselling

Candidates shortlisted for counselling will be able to see a counselling registration link in their registered account. CLAT counselling registration involves two steps.

Step 1 - Update NLU preference

Candidates may update their NLU preferences. There are 22 NLUs for CLAT UG and 19 NLUs for CLAT LLM. Candidates may choose NLUs in the order of preference. It is recommended that candidates should add at least five NLUs in their list preference.

What if no fresh options are entered by the candidates?

In such cases, the preference selected by the candidate in the application form will be considered. After the last date of counselling registration, no request will be entertained for change of NLU preference.

CLAT NLU preference - Important points to note

  • Candidates are advised to select NLUs carefully after considering all options such as a number of seats offered by the law schools, marks and rank secured in CLAT.

  • Candidates will not be considered for admission to any NLU other than those selected by the candidate. For example, a candidate has selected any five NLUs, he/she will be eligible to contest only in the five selected NLUs, not in the remaining NLUs, even if seats are vacant in the remaining NLUs and the candidate may get a seat as per the ranking.

Step 2 - Counselling fee payment

The CLAT 2021 counselling fee is Rs 50,000. Candidates may submit the counselling registration fee in online mode using their CLAT login ID.

CLAT counselling fee - Important Points to Remember

  • The counselling fee must be paid before the end of the last date. Candidates who fail to make the payment before the deadline will not be considered for the seat allotment process.

  • Candidates should not wait until the last minute to submit the registration fee. Early registration is recommended to avoid any server related problems that may arise.

  • The counselling fee is adjusted with the course fee. While submitting the course fee in the allotted college, the candidate will be able to adjust the registration fee with the course fee.

Mere registration for counselling must not be considered as a guarantee for admission. The registration of CLAT counselling will be followed by a seat allotment round. The CLAT seat allotment will be conducted based on merit cum preference criteria.

CLAT Seat Allotment 2021

The seats are allotted in three rounds. Only such candidates will be considered for allotment who have registered for CLAT counselling. After the first round of seat allotment, shortlisted candidates will have three options, as given below.

  1. Accept the allocated seat

Candidates who want to take admission in the allocated college may accept and lock the seat. Note that, after exercising this option, no changes will be considered. Candidates cannot apply for an upgrade, even if there are vacancies in other NLUs.

After accepting the seat, candidates will have to upload/submit all the documents along with the fees to the allotted NLU. The admission process will be completed in the allotted NLU. So, candidates are advised to visit the official website of the NLU and follow the admission guidelines.

  1. Upgrade the option

Candidates who are unsatisfied with the allotted NLU and want to participate in the second round may exercise the upgrade option. Such candidates are also required to submit the documents and make the payment to the allotted university.

To apply for an upgrade, it will be mandatory to take the admission in the allotted NLU by uploading the documents and submitting the fees.

Candidates choosing the upgrade option will have a seat locked in the university allotted previously. However, the new allocation will be offered to the candidate in case vacancy arises in a higher preferred NLU.

Candidates who have been allotted seats but have not paid the fee and uploaded the document will not be eligible for admission and upgradation options.

  1. Exit from CLAT counselling and admission process

Candidates who didn’t get the NLU of their choice and want to quit the admission process may exercise the “Exit option”.

Note that candidates exercising the Exit option will lose the currently allotted seat and will not be considered for the subsequent seat allotment rounds.

Also, if the candidate doesn’t exercise any of the three options, it will be deemed that the candidate is not interested in the admission process. Such candidates will not be considered for admission in the next round and their names will be removed from the counselling list.

Candidates who didn’t get allotment in the first round of seat allotment may get the allotment in the subsequent rounds.
