CLAT Seat Allotment 2021 - Process Explained

The process leading to the seat allotment of CLAT starts with the release of the merit list. The step by step seat allotment process can be summarised in the following steps.

  1. Declaration of merit list

  2. Release of invite list

  3. CLAT counselling

  4. Release of seat allotment in multiple rounds

Declaration of CLAT Merit List

The Consortium releases the merit list for both CLAT UG and CLAT PG at the time of result declaration. Through merit list, candidates are informed about their all India rank including category rank which ultimately decides the fate of the candidates on getting a seat through CLAT seat allotment. The CLAT seat allotment is declared primarily on the basis of two factors -

  • Rank of the candidate in merit list

  • NLU preference given by the candidates at the time of CLAT registration

Release of CLAT Invite List

The conducting body will release an invite list consisting of the names and admit card number of the candidates shortlisted for counselling and seat allotment. The consortium invites 5 times more candidates than the available seats; there are 2596 seats in CLAT UG and 783 seats in CLAT LLM.

CLAT Counselling Process

The candidates whose name appears on the invite list are issued CLAT counselling call letters in online mode. One can download the call letter by logging into the CLAT login portal. To appear in CLAT 2021 counselling, candidates will have to register online at the login portal. The CLAT counselling registration fee is Rs 50,000 which will be adjusted with the semester fee at the allotted national law university. During the counselling of CLAT, candidates will have to submit their documents as asked by the authorities. If the Consortium provides the online counselling facility, candidates will have to submit the scanned documents through CLAT login portal, else they may have to visit the counselling venue.

Release of CLAT Seat Allotment

The counselling of CLAT is conducted in three rounds, and so is the seat allotment. After each round of counselling, the consortium would release a CLAT provisional seat allotment. Note that, for each national law university, separate seat allotment of CLAT is released.

Details mentioned in CLAT 2021 seat allotment list

  • Name of candidates who have been shortlisted for admissions to NLU

  • Admit card number and application number of such candidates

  • All India Rank of the shortlisted candidates

Options after CLAT Seat Allotment

After each round of CLAT 2021 seat allotment, candidates will be given the following options;

  • Accept/lock seats and upload documents and pay NLU fee

Once the seat is accepted, it means the candidate has to pay the NLU fee and complete the admission formalities.

  • Apply for an upgrade, submit documents, and pay NLU fees

The upgrade option is available to those candidates who are not interested in the NLU allotted to them. It allows the candidate to choose any other national law university from the NLU preference given by him/her.
