Law is one of the most popular career options today in India. And, formal education in the legal spectrum starts with the LLB courses. There are two types of LLB courses offered by Indian universities and colleges. These are 3-year LLB and 5-year integrated LLB. The law colleges in India offer LLB courses either through entrance examinations or through the direct admission process.

LLB Admission methods

Admissions to LLB programmes are carried out in two ways: entrance; Based on entrance exams and through the direct admission process. The entrance examination mode of admission is the popular method of admission while direct admission is followed only in some cases.

LLB admission through entrance examinations

Case 1 - Five year LLB admission

The integrated LLB programmes are quite popular these days, the reason being that students can pursue such programmes right after completion of school education. The popular law entrance exams for admission to five year LLB courses are given below.

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)

Perhaps the most popular law entrance exam to date, CLAT is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) in May-June, every year. CLAT scores are accepted by 22 national law universities and more than 50 other law schools across the country. With CLAT, candidates can take admission to 5-year integrated LLB programmes such as BA LLB, BCom LLB, BSc LLB, BBA LB and other such variants.

Symbiosis Law Aptitude Test (SLAT)

The Symbiosis International University conducts a common entrance exam - SLAT for conducting admission to BA LLB and BBA LLB programmes offered by its four law schools. Through SLAT, the law schools offer a combined intake of more than 1000 seats. The law schools of SIU are popular among students. The entrance exam is generally conducted in the month of May.

All India Law Entrance Test (AILET)

National Law University Delhi is not part of CLAT Consortium as it conducts a separate entrance exam popularly known as AILET. The entrance exam is conducted for admission to BA LLB programme along with LLM and PhD programmes. The university offers 110 seats in BA LLB programme through the entrance exam. NLU Delhi is the top-ranked university in India, only behind NLSIU Bangalore (As per NIRF Law School Ranking report of Govt of India. AILET is also conducted around the same time when CLAT is held, i.e; in May-June.

MH CET Law Entrance Exam

Maharashtra’s state-level law entrance exam, MH CET law is one of the biggest law exams in the country. It is a common exam for more than 120 law colleges/universities in the state. Together, the law colleges offer around 11,000 seats through MH CET law. The participating colleges include Government Law College Mumbai, Mumbai University, Adv. Balasaheb Apte College of Law, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial College of Law, Dhule and many other institutions.

PU BA LLB/BCom LLB

Panjab University is a popular choice for law aspiring students. The university offers BA LLB and BCom LLB courses at the undergraduate level. Admission to these courses is conducted through the PU UG law entrance exam. The university has three law centres including the law department of the university. Through the PU UG law entrance exam, the university offers 240 seats in BA LLB and 120 seats in BCom LLB.

Case 2: LLB direct admission

There are many law universities and colleges that offer admission only on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in qualifying examinations. For example, most of the law colleges in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka offer direct admission without any entrance exams.

TNDALU admission

Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University conducts TNDALU admission process for law colleges in Tamil Nadu. There is no entrance exam for admission 5-year LLB, 3-year LLB and LLM programmes as admission is carried out on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in qualifying examinations. Direct admission to Himachal Pradesh University’s BA LLB programme

Himachal Pradesh University offers a BA LLB programme without any entrance exam. The university releases the application form for BA LLB admission tentatively in the month of June. Applicants will have to fill the application form in online mode at the official admission portal of the university. The university then shortlisted the candidates based on their marks in Class 12th (qualifying exam) and conducted counselling to complete the admission process.

KSLU admission process for 5-year LLB, LLB and LLM programmes

Just like in Tamil Nadu, many law colleges in the state of Karnataka also offer admission based on marks obtained by the candidates in qualifying examinations. Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) conducts the admission process for various affiliated law colleges and universities. Eligible candidates have to fill the application form for KSLU admission which is released in both online and offline mode. The university then prepares the admission list containing the name and rank details of the shortlisted candidates. Such shortlisted candidates are called for counselling to complete the admission process which is conducted in offline mode.
