CAT Exam Pattern 2023
As per IIM Lucknow, the CAT 2023 exam pattern is the same as last year. The exam pattern of CAT 2023 helps students to understand the structure of the CAT question paper and marking scheme which will also help in better CAT exam preparation.

CAT 2022 Slot 1 Analysis
Candidates who appeared for the slot 1 exam had different opinions about the CAT 2022 when they were asked about the difficulty level and diversity of questions. However, the majority of them believed that the CAT exam this year was moderate to difficult. Though there were some tricky and difficult questions, most questions were also doable.
The cutoff is expected to go up. There were no big technical glitches; the CAT exam concluded smoothly. VARC was moderate, with 3 easy RCs and 1 tough. In VA, there were para jumbles and summary-type questions which were easy. DILR was tough and so was the QA section.
CAT 2021 Slot 1 Analysis
Keeping in mind the safety of all candidates, CAT 2021 is conducted in three different slots (Morning, Noon, and Evening). IIM Ahmedabad conducted the exam keeping in mind the safety of staff and candidates. CAT slot 1 analysis includes experts' views on the difficulty level of questions asked, ideal attempts, and any changes introduced and related.

CAT Section-Wise Analysis
Verbal Ability Review: In terms of the level of difficulty, the verbal section can be labelled as moderate to difficult. Accuracy will be the key to a good score. There were Four RC passages of a medium length of 4 questions each. The break-up of other questions was Para Jumbles - 3, Para Summary – 3, and odd one out 2. There was a total of 5 TITA questions from the odd one and para jumbles.
There were no TITA questions in RC. The topics of the passages were – 1) Cuttlefish show impressive personality, 2) Book review moral marketing and Dystopian, 3) The classic period of Maya, and 4) Competing virtue with consumption. Overall an attempt of 15-20 with high accuracy will fetch 99%ile.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning: As with this section last year, the section was most difficult. There was a total of 4 sets – 2 of 6 questions each and 2 of 4 questions each. One was a Bar Graph set of 4 questions which were calculation intensive but attempted mostly by all students. Another one was missing values from the table i.e. AR set of 6 questions. 2 sets were data reasoning – one of 4 and another of 6 questions.
There were a total of 5 TITA questions. A typical AR set was related to persons and journals of different categories with a good number of variables and their logical connections. Very few students could attempt more than 2 sets. An attempt of 8-12 questions with good accuracy will fetch 99%ile.
Quantitative Aptitude Review: The Quant section was moderately easier. The majority of the typical topics like Profit & Loss, TSD, Time & Work, and Alligation were fairly represented. Geometry questions were 3 in number with a moderate level of difficulty. Algebra had 5 questions (2 Linear, 2 APGP, and 1 on inequalities. Overall the quant section was doable.
However, like last year, the questions were time-consuming even though the level of difficulty was not high. The ideal strategy was to skip the questions which seemed difficult on the first go. An attempt of 15-19 questions with a good accuracy level, will fetch 99%ile.

The students walked into the CAT exam assuming that the conducting body would continue the pattern of last year and avoid any unnecessary surprises but their prayers were not answered. CAT 2021 Slot 1 had a total of 66 questions, 10 less than last year, spread across 3 usual sections. In terms of pattern, structure, and difficulty level, the exam may have been similar to previous CAT exams with slight variations in difficulty levels across sections.

Exam Structure and Pattern:
The paper consisted of three sections: namely, ‘Quantitative Aptitude (QA)’, ‘Data Interpretation Logical Reasoning (DILR)’, and ‘Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)’, with 24, 20, and 22 questions, respectively. The order of the sections was fixed, with a sectional time limit of 40 minutes.
CAT Slot 1 Analysis by Alchemist
The CAT has reduced the number of questions from 76 to 66. The Verbal section has 24 questions, the LRDI section has 20 questions and the Math section has 22 questions. Unlike the past three years, the LRDI section had set in the easy to moderate range. The Jumbled Paragraphs were easy to moderate, the RCs, on the other hand, had one easy passage and 3 moderate to difficult passages.
Math had questions on arrangements, averages, and algebraic series. The focus continues to be on arithmetic and questions were easier compared to earlier years.
