SONA School of Management Campus Life - Nowadays, aspirants have a varied option to opt for management programs. But, getting into a premier B-school takes a lot of hard and smart work. Few questions arise to every aspirant such as, which B-school to apply for, how the campus will be, how’s the faculty member, will there be extra-curricular activities, how will be the hostel and library facility etc. J.B. Vishwapriya, student of SONA School of Management pursuing first year of MBA, tells us how campus life at one of the premier B-schools in the country.
CareersToady - Tell us something about yourself such as from which place are you from?
J.B. Vishwapriya - I’m J. B. Visshvapriya, I’m from Chennai. I completed my schooling from PSBB - T.Nagar, Chennai and my UG from Ethiraj, Chennai.
CareersToady - Presently which course are you pursuing and in which year are you?
J.B. Vishwapriya - I’m currently pursuing MBA Industry Immersed program. I’m in the 1 st year of the course.
CareersToady - Did you face any difficulty in the initial months when you joined the institute?
J.B. Vishwapriya - There were no such difficulties I have experienced in the starting of the program. Proper instructions and guidance were given for all the initial procedures that were required.
CareersToady - What activities are offered in the institute? Are there any clubs etc for the various extracurricular activities? Which ones have you taken up and are a part of?
J.B. Vishwapriya - The institute offers various clubs such as Quiz Club and also for each specialization i.e. for marketing, finance, HR and Production. The students can enroll themselves in the interested field. I’m part of the Finance club and Quiz club.
CareersToady - Describe a typical day at your institute – what do you do from the time you wake up till you go to sleep?
J.B. Vishwapriya - On a regular day, I wake up at 6 am. I go to college by 8.30am and if the time is available, I go to the library. The college starts at 9 am with 1.5 hours of each session. There is a 15 mins break between each session. The college ends at 4.45 pm. I usually stay up to 5.30 or 6 pm working in the lab or reading in the library for taking references or for project work. The evenings go by completing the assignments and the project work.
CareersToady - Tell us about the faculty-student ratio here and about the teacher-student relationship in your understanding.
J.B. Vishwapriya - The teacher-student ratio is 1:20. The faculty are quite friendly and they try to maintain an open-door policy i.e. they are available at any reasonable time for any assistance.
CareersToady - What all facilities do you have on the campus? What do you like here the most which you feel is unique and differentiating?
J.B. Vishwapriya - The campus has hi-tech labs, classrooms with virtual boards, libraries for each department, tennis court, basketball and cricket ground. It also has a swimming pool and gym for the hostel students.
I really like the labs and libraries which is made exclusively for each department to cater their specific needs.
CareersToady - How comfortable are your hostels and how about the cleanliness factor over there?
J.B. Vishwapriya - The hostel rooms are created in such a way that they feel like your personal room. It is quite spacious and comfortable. The institute takes maximum care of the cleanliness of the hostels. The rooms are cleaned everyday and the cleaning staff are required to get a signature every day from the inmates.
CareersToady - What about the medical facilities? Can you avail requisite medical attention if needed in an emergency?
J.B. Vishwapriya - The institute has an in-house clinic where the doctors are available 24/7 for any medical assistance. The doctors are available for any emergency at any time of the day.
CareersToady - How do you balance your studies, projects, exams and other activities?
J.B. Vishwapriya - I usually plan out my timings based on the College’s Academic Schedule. I don’t usually do my college work on Sundays unless it is urgent. I try to relax and energize myself for the following week. I mostly try to follow the 80-20 principle i.e. I prioritize my work between the assignments and projects based on their deadlines.
CareersToady - Tell us about the clubs and societies at the campus and how significant are they from your point of view or students’ point of view?
J.B. Vishwapriya - There are various clubs in the college. Each club has its separate annual events in which the students participate to explore their talents. It is also very helpful for the students who organize such events because it helps them to develop their management skills and also help them to learn the art of multitasking. As a management student, it is really helpful to organize events.
CareersToady - Is there any in-house magazine or journal for the latest events or happenings at the institute?
J.B. Vishwapriya - The department has an in-house journal named Sona Global Management Review (GMR) on a Bi annual Basis.
CareersToady - What are the popular hangouts at the institute? What, according to you, are the most-visited places nearby?
J.B. Vhishwapriya- Students usually hangout in the canteen, basketball ground and open auditorium. Students usually visit CCD, Brewbakes, etc
CareersToady - How do you spend your leisure time at the campus?
J.B. Vishwapriya - I usually go to the lab or coffee shop on campus.
CareersToady - Do you have any Facebook page of your campus where the students express their views, jokes or ideas, or maybe even a blog where they write about their experience of life at campus?
J.B. Vishwapriya - Yes, the institute does have a Facebook page and Instagram page.
CareersToady - What type of companies come for campus recruitment and what percentage of Do students get placed every year? How is the recruitment process here?
J.B. Vishwapriya - Companies like ITC, TCS, Zoho, Axis Bank, Career Net, Amazon etc. All the students who opt for placements get placed here and the average package is 4.5 LPA. The international Placements starts with 20 LPA.
