XAT 2023 Analysis and Expected Cutoff by T.I.M.E.
The test was slightly different from last year’s with the addition of one question in Decision making and the 5-minute Mock keyboard test. The total number of questions this year was 76 and 25 in Part-I and Part-III respectively.
Part-I comprised three sections:
- Verbal and Logical Reasoning
- Decision-Making
- Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation
Part-II comprised Mock Keyboard testing and Part-III contained General Knowledge questions
The duration of the test was 175 minutes for the first part and 30 minutes for the second.
All questions carried equal marks with negative marking of 0.25 for a wrong answer. There was a negative marking of 0.1 for un-attempted questions in Part-1, for such questions over and above eight un-attempted questions.
The section on General Knowledge, however, did not have any negative marking and the marks scored in this section would be used for evaluation only after the initial screening i.e., these will not be used for the shortlisting of candidates for the GWPI round.
The break-up of the questions across sections is as below.
Section | No of Questions |
---|---|
Part-I | |
Section-1: Verbal and Logical Ability | 26 |
Section-2: Decision Making Ability | 22 |
Section-3: Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation | 28 |
Part-III | |
General Knowledge | 25 |
For the essay, students were to choose from among three topics given to them and write the essay on any one of them. There was a word limit of 250 for the essay. Students had one additional essay to choose from compared to a total of two essays that they had last year.
The topics, reproduced based on feedback from students were as below
- Risk is the essential need of soul. The absence of risk produces a kind of boredom which paralyses in a different way from fear but almost as much.
- Rapid decarbonisation to fulfil India’s net-zero commitment will have business consequences.
- Someone with half your IQ is making 10x as you because they are not smart enough to doubt themselves.

XAT Analysis by T.I.M.E. 2021 - Part I
Section A: Verbal and Logical Ability
- The Verbal and Logical Ability section was a mixed bag of moderately easy/difficult and difficult questions. There were 2 questions based on a poem that had appeared in a TIME AIM XAT test for XAT 2021.
- The Vocab-based questions were not challenging.
- RC passages were not difficult to follow and they were of shorter length than those of last year. But the RC questions involved a lot of critical thinking.
- The breakup of the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension segments is as below:
A) Verbal Ability
The Verbal Ability segment had a total of 11 questions
Area | No. of questions | Difficulty Level |
Error Identification in 6 sentences (Identify the incorrect sentences) | 1 | Easy |
Grammatically correct sentence | 1 | Moderate |
Para completion (Cloze Test) with 3 blanks | 2 | Moderate |
Critical Reasoning | 6 | Moderate Difficult |
Para jumbles | 2 | Difficult |
- Of the five Critical Reasoning questions, two could surely be attempted without going wrong.
- Of the two Para Formation questions, one was easy (the answer options could be used to arrive at the right order) while the other had lengthy sentences and it was relatively challenging to spot the logical connections between the sentences. One of the two should have been surely attempted without going wrong.
- Both the Cloze passages could be attempted with the help of the thought flow of the context itself without going wrong.
- The Critical Reasoning questions tested the candidate on "Intent of the speaker", Inferences, and the Relationship between studies. These CR question types on the XAT resembled the GMAT CR question types.
B) Reading Comprehension
- There were four RC passages, each having three questions.
- There was a poem with two questions. TIME AIMXAT (OMET1002007) had the same poem verse which appeared in the XAT 2021.
Area | No. of questions | Difficulty Level |
Poem verse from "Fire and Ice" by Robert Frost | 2 | Moderate |
RC Passage on "The more we consume, the hungrier we get" | 3 | Difficult |
RC Passage on "Sense of self" | 3 | Difficult |
RC Passage on "Meaningless or pointless jobs" | 3 | Difficult |
RC Passage on "The Postmodern Condition by Jean-Francois Lyotard" | 3 | Very Difficult |
- The poem posed an Inference question. The second question based on the poem was "Which will not serve as a title to the poem?"
- Three of the RC passages had mainly inference-based questions and vocabulary-based questions i.e. explanations or implications of a term.
- One of the passages "Sense of self" had a further application question in addition to inference questions.
- The cut-off in this section is expected to be around 8 marks for XLRI Bm (Male candidates)
Section B: Decision Making
There were 21 questions in this section, from seven sets – Each set is of three questions.
XAT Analysis by T.I.M.E. - Topics and Number of Questions of DM section
Description of set | No. of questions | Comments |
1) Set on Natural Spring water packaging | 3 | No raking questions in this set. Among all the sets, this is the least complicated. |
2) Set on internship | 3 | Two direct action step questions. One question with five options, out of which three to be picked and arranged in decreasing order of effectiveness |
3) Set on Vanarajya | 3 | Two direct action step questions. One question with five options to be arranged in decreasing order of effectiveness |
4) Set on cotton pillow covers – e-commerce - feedback | 3 | All three questions had five options, out of which one was correct (i.e., no ranking of statements) |
5) Set on setting up a bakery – Eggless cakes | 3 | One direct action step question. Two questions with five options to be arranged in decreasing order of effectiveness |
6) Set on shifting government job (SPCIL) to private job G & A- Bribery | 3 | One direct action step question. Two questions with five options and another with four options to be arranged in decreasing order of effectiveness |
7) Set on Small Shop selling computer peripherals | 3 | All three questions had five options, out of which one was correct (i.e. no ranking of statements) |
- The sets were simple and easy to comprehend. The easier part, however, ended there. The questions were subjective and the answer choices were not too easy to eliminate.
- This year’s DM section is as difficult as it was last year. The questions that needed ranking the statements had very close choices. Careful reading was required for all the sets to avoid mistakes.
- By spending about 30 to 35 minutes one would be able to attempt about 15 questions with 80% accuracy.
- We expect the cutoff in this section to be around 8 marks for the BM programme (Male candidates).
Section C: Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation
The section had a mix of a few easy and mostly moderate-difficult questions. A few questions (the one on hare and tortoise, the one on time and work involving 3 persons, the question based on probability, and a few questions from geometry-mensuration) turned out to be challenging and lengthy and required a thorough understanding of concepts.
In contrast to the last year, almost no question in this set required intensive calculations. In a major departure from the pattern that XAT stuck to for the last many years, questions from Data Sufficiency were missing (test takers have become used to seeing 2 DS questions every year in the XAT).
The section was similar in difficulty level compared to last year’s QA-DI section, though the questions were definitely lengthier compared to last year. There were six questions from two DI sets. While the table-based set was very easy, the set involving countries and their GDP was time-consuming and had a strong flavor of reasoning too.
